Why web forums still matter
The article argues that modern social networks often feel hollow compared with earlier forum communities, using a mid-2000s design forum as an example. It revisits the history of web forums and Usenet, including early predictions in 1994 about how threaded, web-based discussion would evolve.

Business✦ Emerging
For BD, Usenet is emerging as a topic worth re-evaluating rather than a finished platform story. The appearance of an archive search engine suggests there may be commercial demand around accessing, organizing, or discovering old Usenet content, so BD should look for partners or niche use cases instead of moving too early.
Developers→ Steady
Usenet is no longer something engineers can simply ignore; moving from Hold to Assess means it should be watched as a legacy data surface that may be integrated or mined. The archive search engine news adds a concrete sign that access to old Usenet content is becoming more practical, so devs should think about compatibility and safe data retrieval paths.
Product▲ Rising
For PMs, Usenet moving from Hold to Assess means it is time to re-evaluate whether it has value as a historical data layer or a niche community channel. The archive search engine news suggests there is real demand for discovering old content, so PMs should define the user problem and success criteria before investing further.
Testers / QA→ Steady
For QA, the main change is that test scope may expand to search, indexing, and retrieval flows around archived content rather than only a modern, self-contained system. As Usenet moves to Assess, testers should pay more attention to result consistency, query reliability, and edge cases in old or non-standard data.
