SparrowMap is a volunteer-run project that uses spare phones, webcams, or USB cameras to detect vehicles passing on a street and keep records only for government vehicles. Detection runs locally on the camera device, while non-government plates are deleted on-device before anything is uploaded, and the server receives only anonymous dots and street-level location data. The project can be run from a browser tab on an unused phone or a desktop machine with a webcam, with setup instructions available for Windows and Linux.
