Cloudflare says it prototyped Cache Transcoding, a system that compresses eligible cached assets with Zstandard before storing them on disk and moving them between data centers. The company reports this can cut eligible assets to about one-third of their original size on average, trading a small CPU increase for lower storage use and less cross-data-center bandwidth.

Cloudflare has updated Smart Tiered Cache to better handle public cloud origins behind anycast or regional unicast endpoints. By accepting a cloud region hint, the system can choose more accurate primary and fallback upper-tier data centers for AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, and Oracle Cloud, improving cache efficiency and reducing unnecessary traffic hairpinning.
