Researchers from four universities tested generative AI chatbots against humans in simulations of long-form scam conversations, including pig butchering-style romance and crypto fraud. The AI systems were effective at impersonating people and, in the trust-building phase, outperformed human participants by some measures. The findings suggest scammers may be able to automate a larger share of the deception process with AI.
