Declassified story of the URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH spy satellites
A declassified article details a long-running U.S. Air Force and NRO program of small hitchhiker satellites used for electronic intelligence collection from orbit. It traces the evolution of satellites such as URSALA, RAQUEL, FARRAH, GLORIA, and CARRIE from bespoke, rapidly developed payloads into standardized systems that also supported tactical military forces. The piece also notes newly released information on previously secret shuttle payloads and the program's role in Mission 7300 SIGINT operations.
