NIST P-256
AssessTechniques
A widely used NIST-standardized elliptic curve for cryptographic signatures.
Why it's here
Placed in Assess: 1 article(s) of evidence from 1 source(s), led by research-stage coverage, with 1 in the last 30 days. Confidence 24%. Low accumulated evidence, so it defaults conservatively pending more signal.

Anthropic says Claude identified how the seed values for several NIST ECDSA curves were generated: from the C library lrand48 pseudo-random generator seeded with Unix timestamps, not from a hash of a hidden phrase. The finding closes a long-running community question about the provenance of the P-192, P-224, P-256, P-384, and P-521 curve parameters and does not indicate a cryptographic break.
